Michigan Chinook (King) Salmon Record ((snagging??))
Looking up the State Record Chinook (King) Salmon In Michigan, I could not believe what I saw!
The State of Michigan actually recognized S N A G G I N G* as a legal method of fishing! This is what was published as their state record Chinook Salmon:
CHINOOK SALMON- Michigan-46.06 Lbs. 43.5 Inches – in 1978 ((Caught SNAGGING* on Grand River))
*Snagging….. also known as snag fishing, snatching, snatch fishing, jagging (Australia), or foul hooking, is a method of fishing that entails catching a fish using hooks without the fish having to take the bait with their mouth.
Here is an article I found written some time back….. I feel the same way about this mindless activity! What the hell are the morons that set up the Michigan State fish records thinking??
“Every October and November, a strange and gruesome spectacle takes place along the banks of the boat channel in Chicago’s Lincoln Park. Whether I’m riding into work via bike or car I can’t help but ogle the armies of bundled-up men “snagging” for salmon. Snagging is a brutal (but legal) form of fishing, whereby the fisherman hoists a massive, weighted treble hook into the water and “rips” it back and forth trying to gaff a bewildered fish. From my car, it looks like the men are dragging for dead bodies. I can’t believe this vulgar form of fishing legal.”
A sizable portion of Lake Michigan’s salmon is stocked by the DNR. Yet, these creatures are wired to swim upstream in the fall to spawn. Having no river to come home to, the fish choose the man-made channel instead. Only a half-mile long and a few feet deep, the waterway is a deathtrap. Even if eggs were produced, once dropped, the fish dies. Therefore, the city allows people to snag salmon until the run is over. The problem is that many salmon are snagged before they have dropped their eggs, therefore killing any chance of spawning! Some of the greedy meat fisherman say that spawning salmon are going to die anyway. That is true, but they need to realize that the SPAWN also dies with the fish!
We need to preserve our future crop of salmon so we can enjoy the fight and natural beauty of a strong salmon run. Plus it makes the fish very line shy and less likely to actually bite. I don’t want any part of snagging and feel it should be banned anywhere Salmon and Trout spawn in the USA!
…..Here is what another die hard Great lakes Salmon fisherman had to say: “I understand it would be a shame to let these highly edible creatures die and rot but I still find “snagging” offensive. I love fishing. I must own 20 rods and reels. I have a cabin in Wisconsin. I grew up catching, cleaning and cooking Lake Michigan game fish. On slow days, gouging the belly of an unsuspecting fish may have crossed my mind but we always considered it sleazy, something a tramp would do.”
Michigan should reconsider their deplorable stance. Their opinion about snagging should not be used when determining a record holding fish. Actually, snagging should be illegal on any of the GREAT LAKES! It kills the spawn needed for reproduction!
